This Cabernet Sauvignon is deep ruby in color with violet hues and a vivid magenta rim. In the glass, aromas of mixed berry jam, plum, black currant and vanilla mingle with notes of violets, cedar and black tea. Upon tasting, this dry wine offers concentrated black cherry, black currant and fig with a fruity then savory finish with hints of mocha, white pepper, sweet tobacco, and stone. The body is bold, yet balanced with moderate tannins that fade gently alongside the finish.

All of the grapes used in this wine were Certified Organic. The dominant Cabernet variety came from four distinctive vineyards, each contributing unique character to the wine: Hidden Oaks vineyard (34.3%) located in the Clements Hills AVA on rolling gravelly soil, Kosunam Vineyard (22.4%), near Acampo in the Mokelumne River AVA, L&P Vineyard in Madera (19.3%), is a warm site with sandy soils, and Lyon Vineyard in the Alexander Valley (2.1%), where the grapes are grown on sandy loam alluvial soils along the Russian River. Drawing on a rich tradition of crafting Cabernet Sauvignon wines of complexity and balance by blending in small lots of complementary varieties, Merlot (11.5%) , Graciano (4.8%), and Syrah (1.1%) for this wine were grown on the Terra Alta vineyard in the Clements AVA of the Lodi area. Petit Sirah (3.7%) and Zinfandel (0.3%) were grown on the Vista Luna vineyard in the Borden Ranch appellation of Lodi, and Zinfandel was also grown at the Teresi Vineyard (0.4%) in the Lodi AVA.
After a record wet winter, the 2023 growing season was long and cool. Budbreak was a bit late due to cool and wet soils, and the ensuing summer was dry and warm, but without any significant heat spikes as were experienced in 2022. Crop loads were normal to high, further lengthening the ripening period. 2023 will go down as one of the latest harvested vintages in recent memory. The long, relatively cool season allowed for a very long hang time which fully developed color and phenolic structure in the reds. The quality of the resulting wine is very high.
All of the lots were crushed separately to stainless steel fermenters and pumped over two to three times per day for 7-10 days to fully extract color, tannins and flavor. Warm ferments at 80 degrees Fahrenheit produced balanced, full-bodied wines. When the new wines had fermented to complete dryness, the lots were pressed separately in tank presses and allowed to proceed through malolactic fermentation to soften acidity and add complexity. The new wine was then racked away from the lees to a combination of French and American toasted oak and aged for 3 months. The individual lots were tasted, and blending trials were prepared in order to determine the best-balanced blend. Finally, this Cabernet Sauvignon was filtered and bottled.
